At
my hypnotherapy
practice in Cheltenham hundreds of smokers have found it easy
to quit smoking using hypnosis and the power of hypnotic suggestion.
These are normal people, like you, that by using hypnosis and hypnotherapy
were able to do something amazing and stop smoking quickly, easily
and effectively, and NEVER touch or want a cigarette again!Helping people to stop smoking is a specialist skill and I regularly receive referrals from previous ex-smokers or doctors and other therapists around the Cheltenham and Gloucester area.
"Dear
Richard, Steve, Christine and myself would like to say
a BIG thank you for giving us the confidence and making us
believe in ourselves so we could become non-smokers.A month has now passed and we are proud to say that it is the best thing that has happened to us. We have just come back from our first holiday together as non-smokers and it felt so great not having to stress out about having our last cigarette before we boarded the plane, infact I don't think we even gave it a thought, for this we have you to thank. I am trying hard to get all my smoking friends to come and see you, you come highly recommended. Our friends and families are so pleased for us and it makes us feel proud that we have achieved something that infact was so simple to do, thank you once again, best wishes" Ali and Steve, Cheltenham, September 2006 ![]() Update: September 2007 "I just thought I would drop you a quick line to let you know that we are still Non smokers. Steve, Christine and myself hit the 12month mark last Friday and are very very proud that we have at last kicked the habit well and truly..." |
Stopping smoking is one of the most common reasons that people consult a hypnotherapist and therapists are usually judged on their success rate in this field.
The stop smoking method I use has over the years shown an amazing 95% success rate.
UNDERSTANDING exactly how smoking works and the psychological motivations behind why you smoke is the KEY to being able to stop permanently and completely. The other important and incredible tool for stopping smoking is the state of HYPNOSIS.
All about smoking
'I'm addicted to nicotine and smoking...' I hear you say.
Nope. Not at all.
And your BELIEF that you are is one of the reasons (amongst others) that you have found it difficult to quit. Many many people, including drug companies, the NHS and even hypnotherapists try and treat the addiction but smoking isn't addictive (and I'll show you why in the hypnotherapy session).
The late Professor Hans Eysenck (one of the world's most famous
psychologists), said that 'Smoking is not an addiction because
the term 'addiction' really has no scientific meaning ... You can
call anything addictive which a person does routinely and which
he would be sorry to stop doing...' Interestingly, in 1996 Dr Sandy Macara, the then chairman of the British Medical Association and a former smoker, wrote 'I don't accept that smokers are truly addicted to tobacco. I think they have a habit ... I believe the majority of smokers could stop tomorrow - no, today - if they really wanted to.'
To understand smoking and why you smoke we need to look at the PSYCHOLOGY behind it (not the physical effects).
Smoking is all about stress and reward. You have a hard day at work...you smoke and feel better....your partner nags you.....you smoke and immediately feel better.....your boss shouts at you....you smoke and feel better.....
So you quit smoking and ditch the cigarettes for the fourth year running with willpower/patches/gum because you think you're life is going to be wonderful without it, but then you don't see any immediate benefits......your work is still hard.......your partner still nags you.........your boss is still the same, and NOW you haven't got anything to relax you and reduce your stress!
You 'give up' the one thing that actually helps you to feel less stressed...for no immediate 'reward' or 'incentive'. It's no wonder that you feel tense, stroppy, angry and irritable!
Most effective way to stop smoking IS HYPNOSIS
In the 1990's scientifc publication New Scientist carried out a massive study into all of the different methods of stopping smoking. The study involved 70,000 people and concluded that the most effective way of quitting smoking was HYPNOSIS.
So then, what if you could stop smoking in a single session with
hypnosis and feel FANTASTIC? What if you could completely understand the psychology behind the behaviour of smoking enabling you to quit SIMPLY and EASILY?
What if positive hypnotic suggestion could be placed deep in your unconscious mind so that you really do feel CALMER, more confident and more RELAXED?
Wouldn't it be easy to be a NON SMOKER? Of course it would!

Common questions about stopping smoking with Richard at the Cheltenham Hypnotherapy Clinic
How many sessions does it take to quit smoking?
One session, normally lasting about an hour and a half.
How much does it cost?
A stop smoking session is currently £165.
Why does this type of session cost more than normal sessions?
Helping people to stop smoking is a specialist skill. It takes experience, time, preparation and a lot more insight/effort/training/skill - in other words it is a far more involving session than your normal type of suggestion therapy session.
Why is your hypnotherapy so successful?
Partly because I have seen many, many smokers and built up a lot of experience, but also because the therapy session it isn't JUST about stopping smoking, but also improving yourself / your life. My aim isn't just to help you to quit smoking, but for you to feel more positive, confident, full of life, happier, calmer, less stressed (see testimonials below).
Richard, I have seen a hypnotist before and it didn't work?
There could be many reasons for this - was it the right time for you? Did you feel comfortable with the other therapist? Did they understand how smoking works? Did they help you to change your belief system so that you truly believe that you are a NON SMOKER rather than just a smoker that has stopped?
I have seen many people that have previously tried hypnotherapy - you will find my approach / session very different so do not worry.
Do I need to put some effort in?
Yes, a bit. By being honest, open and engaging in the session you will maximise your success!
Success stories from ex smokers
"Richard has such a pleasant and trusting way with him. He
helped me give up smoking after just one session. That was
nearly three years ago. There has not been, nor will there
be, any relapses. I look at life purely as a non smoker now.I wish I’d have met Richard twenty years ago and avoided all the failed attempts on my own. Richard has subsequently helped me in other areas of my life where a boost of extra confidence or determination is needed. I recommend him wholeheartedly." Andy Wood, September 2006 |
"Dear Richard, I am now a non-smoker and after hypnotherapy
I actually believe it when I say it. I don't worry
in the slightest when I consider the prospect of never putting
a cigarette in my mouth again. In fact the opposite happens.
I feel good about myself and my achievement.I still can't believe how easy it was, and why I didn't do it years ago! One of the reasons I did not try it before was my fear that if it did not work there was no hope for me. Hypnotherapy radically changed something inside me which made me able to believe that I could be a non-smoker...and now I am." Lindsey Patterson, Cheltenham |
| "Dear Richard, My husband came to see you just over 13 weeks ago to attend one of your ‘stop smoking’ sessions. I am pleased to report that he is still a non smoker. Being the biggest anti smoker in the world I have been desperate for him to give up over the last ten years since we met. After many failed attempts I finally recognized that it needed to be his decision and not mine and that nothing would work unless he was 100% committed to giving up. When that time came, your hypnotherapy sessions were recommended by some friends, in particular, John ****** who also gave up with your help a couple of years ago. Scott is so pleased that he took John’s advice to book an appointment to see you; I can honestly say I do not think I have seen Scott so happy and relaxed about being a non smoker...it became quite apparent that the desire to smoke was not as great as the desire to succeed at ‘giving up’. To think he has given up without the need for any nicotine replacement drugs is incredible. For the first time ever I am totally confident that Scott will not look back, so on behalf of Scott I would like to say a big thank you. We are both truly grateful for your help." Regards, Helen and Scott Gynn, July 2006 |
| "Hi Richard, Well its Tuesday afternoon, three days since I saw you on Saturday and I haven't smoked one cigarette! I cannot begin to tell you how happy this makes me feel. Since my session with you the craving for a cigarette has completely disappeared, I don't even think about them anymore! If I had known that it would be this easy to do I would have come to see you years ago. Thank you." Jenny, April 2006 |
| "Richard, I've been meaning to drop you a line for a few weeks now but with wedding plans etc it's been a bit hectic. Many thanks to you, I'm very proud to say that 7 weeks on I'm still a non smoker. It's quite unbelievable and lots of my friends have now been to see you. So far out of I think 8 of us we have a 100% clean sheet. Many thanks again and please think of us on our wedding day as a non smoker!" Ellie, Cheltenham |
| "Hi Richard, You may recall that I came to see you about a month ago to stop smoking. I am delighted to say I am still not smoking! When I left you I felt really positive. I felt great and haven't looked back since. I am astounded that I really do feel like a non-smoker and have felt so much better and more energetic since. I actually can't believe that anyone would chose to give up any other way! Thanks so much Richard, it was quite possibly the best money I have ever spent! " Rachel, Leeds |
| "17 months on from the single session
I had with you and not a puff since. Last week I ran the London Marathon - (my first) which would have been unthinkable 18 months ago. Thank you" Mark, April 2004 |
